A selection of views of Thatcham town centre. Thatcham is a much
older settlement than its now much larger neighbour, the name
Newbury itself means the new borough in Old English. Thatcham is
very small in comparison with a population of about only 20,000,
though this is about double what it was ten years ago. It is
located about 1.5km north of the Kennet and, though small, has
expanded southwards to meet it. The railway was built alongside
the river mainly due to the main landowner of the time not
wanting trade taken away from the village's coaching inn.
